Bhavta Harrielall has commenced her exposure to the traditional and religious dance style of Kathak at the tender age of eight years old. Bhavta is a gifted dancer, who has progressed to reach an advanced stage of Kathak dance. She has displayed remarkable discipline, perseverance, hard work, dedication and devotion to the art of Kathak dance for nine years that has brought her to her Rangmanch Pravesh.
In October 2011, Bhavta represented South Africa at the Second International Dance Festival in New Delhi and thereafter performed in Kolkata and Assam. At fourteen years of age, Bhavta was the youngest participant at the festival and the participants of this festival were selected by the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) in New Delhi.
Bhavta has played lead roles as a Kathak dancer in numerous musicals, recitals, and dance dramas hosted by Kala Darshan. These include: GEET MILAN (2006), BHAKTIRAS (2007), KATHAMRITA (2007), MAHADEVI (2008), PANCHRATNA (2009), SWARANGIKA (2010), PARIKRAMA (2011) and RAGAS & TALAS (2011). She has also participated at music and dance festivals hosted by The Indian Academy of South Africa and The Indian Embassy (Durban).
In 2012, Bhavta lead the production BHAVRANG which included Padhant (Recitation of Bols) which she recited live. To recite those Bols at the age of fifteen, was no easy task, and was rendered by her with such clarity and ease that showed her advancement in the art of Kathak and the pure talent that she possesses.
Bhavta will be matriculating this year (2014) at her school, Eden College, Durban. She was awarded the shooting star award for her dancing in 2011 and 2012 by her school.
In 2012, Bhavta has participated in School productions by Eden College which include ‘Move Along’ which was hosted by Eden College Dance Department and ‘Music Soiree’ by Eden College Music Department. She has also performed at the KwaZulu Natal Department of Sports and Recreation youth camp and The Chatsworth Diwali Festival at Chatsworth Stadium.
Bhavta’s performance highlights for 2013 include: Imbumba, Giyani Lusha, Eastern Rendezvous which was hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture as part of its Social Cohesion and Nation Building, World heritage day, MVG Platinum card holder’s concert hosted by Sibaya Casino, Hotel and Entertainment Kingdom.
